New Nissan Leaf Faces Battery Shortage

New Nissan Leaf Production Cuts

The New Nissan Leaf has been praised as a step forward for Nissan, but it already faces supply problems. Reports from Nikkei reveal that Nissan cut production plans by more than half between September and November. The decision stems from issues with high-voltage battery pack supplies.

Production at Nissan’s Tochigi plant in eastern Japan will drop by several thousand units per month. This reduction affects both the American and Japanese markets. Customers eager for Nissan’s latest EV may now face delivery delays ahead of its end-of-year commercial launch.

Battery Shortages Affecting Supply

A supplier failed to deliver enough batteries for the New Nissan Leaf, forcing Nissan to scale back output. Despite this, the company insists the official launch remains on track. Deliveries should begin later this month or in early October.

While short-term shortages create delays, Nissan says long-term availability will stabilize once supplies improve. Even so, the production cut could frustrate buyers in the U.S., where demand for affordable EVs continues to grow rapidly.

Pricing and Range of the New Nissan Leaf

The 2026 New Nissan Leaf looks sharper, drives better, and features a refreshed interior. Nissan has also focused on affordability, making the Leaf one of the cheapest EVs in America.

The S+ trim comes with a 75-kWh battery and a range of 303 miles, starting at $29,990. A smaller 52-kWh entry-level S grade will follow, with a shorter range and an even lower price. Nissan has not yet revealed the final price for the base model, but it will likely undercut many rivals.

Market Outlook

These production issues highlight the growing pains of electric vehicle manufacturing. Nissan views the New Nissan Leaf as central to its strategy in the EV market. Strong pricing and practical range make it a compelling choice, especially against higher-priced competitors.

If Nissan can fix supply problems quickly, the New Nissan Leaf could capture a large share of the U.S. and Japanese EV markets. Its mix of value, design, and range positions it as one of the most accessible electric vehicles available today.
