BMW Gas Engines Will Never Disappear

BMW Gas Engines Remain Central to Strategy

BMW Gas Engines are here to stay, even as the German automaker pours billions into electric vehicles. Speaking to Autocar India, Jochen Goller, BMW board member for brands and sales, stated that combustion power will “never disappear.” This declaration highlights BMW’s evolving stance on powertrains as the company balances global EV investment with traditional engine demand.

Billions Invested in Neue Klasse EVs

BMW has committed heavily to electrification through its Neue Klasse platform, which will form the basis for future EVs worldwide. The company has already enjoyed success with EV sales in Europe and the United States, showing that demand exists in mature markets. Still, BMW refuses to abandon internal combustion engines. Instead, it views them as essential for sustaining global sales where EV adoption remains low.

Diversified Powertrain Portfolio

BMW Gas Engines are part of a diversified powertrain approach. The automaker is developing three key platforms:

  • Neue Klasse EV platform for global electric models.
  • Combustion-only platform designed for entry-level vehicles.
  • Flexible platform for larger SUVs and sedans, supporting all-electric, plug-in hybrid, and gasoline powertrains.

This strategy ensures BMW can meet the varied demands of markets like India, the Middle East, and parts of Eastern Europe, where EV adoption lags behind Western standards. Gasoline-powered models provide profitability in these regions, while EVs and hybrids cater to stricter emissions markets.

Europe’s 2035 Deadline and BMW’s Future

BMW maintains its target for half of annual sales to be electric by 2030. However, the automaker is positioning gas engines as part of its long-term survival strategy. The European Union plans to ban new cars with emissions by 2035, but discussions around exceptions for plug-in hybrids and extended-range EVs could extend combustion sales in some form.

The approach reflects both pragmatism and caution. By maintaining multiple platforms, BMW can adapt quickly to consumer demand and regulatory shifts. While the focus on EVs continues, BMW Gas Engines ensure profitability and flexibility for the next decade. The trade-off lies in balancing environmental goals with the realities of consumer markets and infrastructure readiness.
