Rivian, an American electric vehicle (EV) maker, has quickly become a prominent player in the electric vehicle market. Known for its electric pickup trucks, SUVs, and delivery vans, Rivian has redefined the automotive industry with a focus on sustainability and cutting-edge technology. What sets Rivian apart from other automakers is its strategic manufacturing base, which, unlike the coastal cities of California, is located in the heart of the Midwest—specifically in Normal, Illinois.

The Origins of Rivian’s Manufacturing Plant in Normal, Illinois

Rivian’s growth story began with the purchase of the former Diamond Star Motors plant in Normal, Illinois, in 2017. The factory, originally built in 1988, was part of a joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler. Over the years, it produced popular models such as the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Chrysler Galant. However, after Mitsubishi scaled back production in the 2000s, the plant became increasingly idle.

Rivian’s decision to buy the facility for $16 million in 2017 was a strategic move that allowed the company to tap into an established manufacturing ecosystem. By modernizing the facility and adapting it to EV production, Rivian positioned itself to ramp up mass production efficiently, drawing on the expertise of local engineers and suppliers. Since 2021, the plant has been responsible for producing Rivian’s R1T pickup truck, R1S SUV, and EDV delivery vehicle for Amazon.

The R2 Model and Rivian’s Expanding Production

In 2024, Rivian unveiled its R2 model, a smaller, more affordable EV aimed at broadening the brand’s appeal. However, with increasing demand for electric delivery vans and personal EVs, Rivian quickly realized the need for additional production capacity. The Normal plant, which currently has a capacity of 100,000 vehicles per year, is already reaching its limits. As a result, Rivian is building new production facilities to meet future demand.

One such facility is located in Social Circle, Georgia, where Rivian broke ground in September 2025 for a multi-billion-dollar plant. This new facility is expected to produce up to 200,000 units per year by 2028, with plans to increase production to 400,000 units by 2030. The new plant will be crucial in producing the R2 and R3 models for both the US and European markets.

Rivian’s European Expansion and Partnership with Mercedes-Benz

Rivian’s expansion is not limited to the US. The company has also formed a partnership with Mercedes-Benz to produce electric delivery vans in Europe. The goal is to strengthen Rivian’s position in the growing European electric delivery market, which has seen a rise in demand for low-emission vehicles.

The collaboration between Rivian and Mercedes-Benz, announced in 2022, aims to provide electric delivery solutions that help companies reduce their carbon footprint and lower operating costs. The first Rivian electric vans are expected to roll off the production line in Stuttgart, Germany, in the near future, further solidifying Rivian’s international reach.

The Future of Rivian: Expanding Footprint and Sustainable Innovation

Looking ahead, Rivian has ambitious plans to continue its growth trajectory. In addition to the Georgia and Europe facilities, the company is also focused on sustainability and innovation. Rivian’s commitment to producing zero-emissions vehicles aligns with global efforts to combat climate change, making it a crucial player in the electric vehicle revolution.

The company is also working on expanding its battery technology and charging infrastructure, which will be essential to supporting the mass adoption of electric vehicles. With continued investments in innovation and a growing production capacity, Rivian is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of automotive manufacturing.

Rivian’s Resilient Rise: From Startup to Global EV Powerhouse

Rivian’s rise from a startup to a global leader in electric vehicles is a testament to the company’s resilience and commitment to sustainable transportation. With its roots in the heart of America’s Midwest, the company has harnessed the power of local talent and advanced manufacturing to scale up production and meet the increasing demand for electric vehicles.

As Rivian continues to expand its footprint in the US, Europe, and beyond, the company is making significant strides toward creating a more sustainable, electrified future. Whether it’s the R1T, R1S, EDV, or the upcoming R2 and R3 models, Rivian’s innovative vehicles are set to drive change in the automotive industry for years to come.
