Electric vehicles (EVs) are known for their quiet rides, but that lack of engine noise can make the driving experience feel less exciting. To combat this, many performance EVs now feature synthesized sounds. While most of these sounds are futuristic, BMW’s upcoming electric M3 will feature real engine sounds sampled from its combustion models, making the experience more authentic.

BMW’s Electric M3 Gets Real Engine Sounds

BMW’s Motorsport division recently released a video showing the electric M3 prototype’s sound. The sound inside the cabin closely resembles the turbocharged inline-six S55 engine from a previous-generation M4. The video also included sounds from an E90 M3 with its S65 V8 engine and an E63 M6 with a V10 engine. The electric M3 prototype accelerated, producing a sound similar to the M6’s V10. This suggests that the M3 will allow drivers to choose from multiple real BMW M engine sounds.

BMW’s focus on incorporating real engine sounds, rather than just synthetic ones, helps maintain its iconic driving experience. This feature adds a layer of authenticity that synthetic sounds alone cannot provide.

Electric M3 Features Simulated Gear Shifts

In addition to simulated engine sounds, the electric M3 will allow drivers to simulate gear shifts. This feature was first introduced by Hyundai in the Ioniq 5 N. It adds a sense of involvement, although it may slightly reduce acceleration speed. Mercedes-AMG also uses similar features in its C590 EV prototype, which simulates a V8 engine sound along with vibrations to replicate the sensation of engine overrun.

BMW’s Commitment to Electrification

BMW is fully committed to electrification, and the electric M3 plays a key role in this shift. Although combustion vehicles will still be sold in the EU until 2035, BMW aims to prove that electric cars can offer the same thrill as its iconic gas-powered models. The electric M3 will use a quad-motor setup with advanced torque vectoring to give it the handling expected from a true M car.

Looking Forward to the Electric M3

The electric M3 is one of the most exciting upcoming EVs. BMW’s continued push to blend traditional driving experiences with cutting-edge electric technology makes it a standout in the industry. The non-M i3 sedan will debut this year, and the hot version of the M3 likely won’t be far behind. The success of the i4 M50 shows that BMW is on the right track with electric M cars, and the electric M3 will likely follow suit.
