Great Wall Motor (GWM) chairman Wei Jianjun recently shared a teaser photo of the company’s first supercar. The car will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain and a self-developed 4-liter V8 engine. Priced above 1 million yuan (140K USD), it aims to rival the Yangwang U9 in the competitive Chinese market.
GWM has worked on the supercar since 2021. In January 2025, GWM executives began developing the new luxury brand under the codename “BG.” That same month, GWM registered the trademark “自信汽车” (Zixin Qiche, Confidence Auto) with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA).
In April 2025, GWM’s CTO, Wu Huixiao, confirmed the company spent five years developing the supercar, focusing heavily on cost control. On July 23, 2025, Wei Jianjun shared the teaser photo on his official Weibo account. He took the photo on GWM’s 35th anniversary. In the image, Wei and company executives celebrate the milestone. GWM was founded in 1984, but Wei considers 1990 the company’s true anniversary, marking his appointment as director.
The teaser photo reveals a large, sleek vehicle covered in black film. We can see the vehicle has a long body, sloped bonnet line, and low beltline. Wide fenders and air vents in front of the rear fenders suggest it has a rear-mounted engine.
GWM’s self-developed 4-liter V8 engine was first unveiled at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show in April. It will pair with the plug-in hybrid powertrain, but further details on its specs are not yet available.
The Yangwang U9 from BYD will likely be the primary competitor. The U9 features four e-motors, delivering 1,287 hp and 1,680 Nm. From September 2024 to June 2025, the U9 sold 160 units. It starts at 1,680,000 yuan (234,150 USD), making it a strong rival to the GWM model.
