Fixing an EV is Cheaper Than a Gas Car: Here’s What Owners Say

When it comes to fixing an EV, many new owners mistakenly believe it’s more expensive than repairing a traditional combustion vehicle. However, new data from CDK Global’s “EV Ownership Study” shows that, in reality, EV repairs are often cheaper. While there is one downside, EVs still tend to offer a more affordable repair experience than their gas-burning counterparts.

Why Fixing an EV is Cheaper

New electric vehicle owners often assume that fixing an EV would cost them more than maintaining a gasoline-powered car. The misconception arises because many people are unfamiliar with the technology behind EVs and the maintenance requirements of electric powertrains. However, once owners gain some experience, they realize that EVs are much cheaper to repair. This is due to fewer moving parts and less complexity compared to internal combustion engines (ICEs), leading to lower service and maintenance costs.

Survey Results: What EV Owners Are Saying

CDK Global’s recent survey found that a majority of non-Tesla EV owners have noticed the affordability of EV repairs compared to their gasoline-powered vehicles. Specifically, 53% of non-Tesla EV owners said that maintaining their electric vehicles costs them less than servicing their gas vehicles. Similarly, 41% of Tesla owners agreed with this assessment, showing that EV maintenance can be more cost-effective, especially when it comes to routine repairs and minor fixes.

However, the study also highlights that EV owners tend to visit service departments more frequently than gas vehicle owners. Despite the lower costs, EV repairs are still more time-consuming. Tesla owners report a 23% longer wait for repairs, while non-Tesla EV owners face a 34% longer wait.

The Rise of Mobile Services for EVs

A noteworthy trend from the CDK Global survey is the growing preference for mobile service options. As EV ownership increases, more owners are choosing convenience by utilizing mobile service vans and pick-up services. In 2024, 19% of EV owners opted for mobile service visits, up from just 14% in 2023. Additionally, 9% of owners had their vehicles picked up for service, compared to 6% in the previous year.

While these services are making EV repairs more accessible and convenient, the time spent waiting for service remains a concern. In 2023, 40% of EVs could be picked up the same day after repairs. However, this figure dropped to just 28% in 2024, indicating that EV service times are gradually increasing.

Challenges and Delays in EV Repair Times

While EV owners may enjoy lower repair costs, the trade-off often comes in the form of longer service times. For Tesla owners, the waiting period for repairs increased by 23%, while non-Tesla owners reported an even higher 34% increase in wait times. This delay is problematic, as EVs become more popular and more customers are relying on these services.

Interestingly, the number of EVs that can be repaired and ready for pickup the next day has increased, rising from 21% in 2023 to 29% in 2024. Despite these improvements, the increasing demand for EV repairs poses a challenge for traditional automakers who need to ramp up their service capabilities to meet the rising tide of EV owners.

Why EVs Still Cost Less to Maintain

The key takeaway from the survey is clear: fixing an EV is generally more affordable than repairing a gasoline-powered car. Despite the increased wait times, the overall cost savings for EV owners in repairs, parts, and service fees far outweigh the challenges. The simpler design of EVs, with fewer components to maintain and replace, contributes significantly to lower repair costs.

As more non-Tesla EVs hit the market, automakers must adapt by training technicians and expanding service options. This will ensure that the growing number of EVs on the road can be serviced quickly and efficiently. In the meantime, EV owners can continue to enjoy the financial benefits of lower maintenance costs, with only a slight increase in wait times for repairs.

Conclusion: The Future of EV Repairs

In conclusion, fixing an EV is still a more affordable option than maintaining a gas-powered vehicle, despite longer repair times. As EV ownership continues to rise, the automotive industry will have to address the service challenges to keep pace with this growing market. While the technology and infrastructure for servicing EVs are improving, the future of EV repair costs looks promising, making electric vehicles an even more attractive option for the cost-conscious driver.
