The reports, which surfaced over the weekend, suggested that JLR had instructed engineers to develop a petrol-engined system alongside the all-electric powertrain for the Type 00, the first model in Jaguar’s reinvented line-up. The claims were fueled by concerns within the company about exclusively launching the brand with electric vehicles (EVs), particularly given the slow sales of premium EVs in the market.
However, a senior JLR source confirmed to Autocar that these rumors were unfounded. “Rubbish,” was the response to the speculation, reaffirming that Jaguar will stick to its original plan of relaunching as an all-electric luxury brand.
A JLR spokesperson also officially reiterated, “Our plans to reinvent Jaguar as an electric-only luxury automotive brand are unchanged. Last month, prototype passenger rides received overwhelmingly positive reactions from global media, and we are looking forward to unveiling the first new electric Jaguar later this year.”
JLR first announced its intention to transition Jaguar to an all-electric lineup in late 2024, with the final internal combustion engine (ICE) models, like the F-Pace SUV, being phased out by early 2025. The Type 00 is set to be the flagship model of this new era.
Autocar recently had the opportunity to experience a passenger ride in the Type 00 production car and described it as “the best-riding car ever,” hinting at the high performance and comfort that Jaguar intends to deliver with its electric future.
By the end of 2027, the Type 00 will be joined by a saloon and an SUV as part of Jaguar’s luxury electric vehicle line-up.
