China’s electrified work truck market saw explosive growth in 2025, with 231,100 new NEV trucks registered. This marks a massive 182% increase from the previous year. Hybrid and electric trucks are no longer a niche market but are becoming the future of heavy-duty transport.
The Surge in NEV Truck Sales
December 2025 alone saw nearly 45,300 heavy-duty NEVs (HDEV) registered, capturing 54% of the entire new truck market for the month. This was a 198% year-over-year increase and a 62% jump from November.
Government policy, including phase-out trade-in subsidies and the upcoming NEV purchase tax adjustments, likely spurred the demand. Companies rushed to replace old vehicles and take advantage of these incentives.
Cost Advantages of Electrified Work Trucks
The adoption of NEV trucks is driven by the total cost of ownership (TCO) benefits. According to CATL’s Xia Nan, NEV trucks can save fleet operators up to 1.2 million yuan (about $165,000) over a 10-year life cycle compared to diesel trucks. Charging infrastructure, including fast-charging stations and battery swap options, is advancing to support these electric trucks, minimizing downtime.
Market Maturity and Leading Manufacturers
The market for zero-emission heavy-duty trucks is maturing rapidly. A 2025 ICCT report shows that the top five manufacturers—XCMG, SANY, FAW, Shacman, and Yutong—hold 61% of the HDEV segment. This mirrors the market concentration of diesel truck makers, who dominate 75% of the traditional truck market.
The dominance of these original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) signals that the electric truck sector is reaching a comparable level of maturity to internal combustion engine trucks.
New Players and Technological Innovations
New players like Windrose Technology and Pony.ai are helping push the industry forward. Windrose focuses on Class 8 long-haul trucks, while Pony.ai targets autonomous convoy operations. These innovations signal that China’s electric truck boom is expanding beyond urban areas to global freight applications.
Struggles in Other Markets
Despite China’s massive growth in NEV truck sales, other regions lag behind. In the United States, only 200 zero-emission trucks were sold in the first half of 2025. This is a stark contrast to China’s explosive growth, highlighting the need for more global adoption of electrified work trucks.
