De Lijn, the Flemish public transport operator based in Mechelen, Belgium, has made significant strides toward sustainability by ordering 500 electric buses from Daimler Buses. The commitment, which aligns with the company’s goal to transition to a fully zero-emission bus fleet by 2035, marks a key step in electromobility for the region.
Boosting Electromobility with Daimler Buses
This partnership represents a major push for De Lijn electric buses and highlights the operator’s dedication to transforming public transport. The first 80 buses of this order will be delivered starting in early 2027, with Mercedes-Benz eCitaro buses, the flagship electric buses from Daimler. This initiative comes as De Lijn exclusively focuses on electric buses since 2022, in line with its long-term electromobility strategy.
Key Features of the New Electric Buses
The eCitaro buses are designed to be both locally CO₂-free and safe for passengers. Omnibus Weidachstein GmbH, a family-owned bus company in the Bavarian district, recently received a batch of five Mercedes-Benz eCitaro buses equipped with advanced safety systems. These include Frontguard Assist, Sideguard Assist 2, and the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS), ensuring passenger and pedestrian safety. The buses also come with energy-efficient air conditioning, active filters, and comfortable seating.
Electric Buses: A Leap Toward Sustainability
De Lijn’s decision to order 500 electric buses reinforces the growing commitment of transport providers toward a greener future. The move to electric vehicles (EVs) is part of a broader European effort to reduce emissions and meet climate goals, with De Lijn playing a pivotal role in leading sustainable transportation in Belgium.
More Green Solutions on the Horizon
As the partnership with Daimler Buses continues, De Lijn aims to accelerate its transition to a fully zero-emission fleet while improving the comfort and safety of its passengers. This electric bus expansion is a testament to the increasing adoption of green technologies and sustainable transport solutions across Europe.
