BYD has boosted confidence in its electric cars by extending the Blade battery warranty to 155,000 miles, covering both EVs and plug-in hybrids already on UK roads.
BYD has strengthened its position in the electric vehicle market by dramatically extending the warranty on its Blade battery to 155,000 miles. The move, which increases coverage from the previous 93,000-mile limit, applies not only to new vehicles but also to existing BYD models already registered and in use.
The expanded warranty underscores BYD’s confidence in the long-term durability of its battery technology at a time when buyers are increasingly focused on longevity, residual value, and total cost of ownership. Importantly, the coverage applies to both fully electric vehicles and BYD’s Super Hybrid plug-in hybrid models.
For UK drivers, the change provides added reassurance as electric cars continue to move into the mainstream.
What the extended warranty covers
Under the updated policy, BYD will repair or replace the battery free of charge if its state of health drops below 70 percent within the first 155,000 miles. This sits alongside BYD’s existing six-year, 93,000-mile new car warranty and its 12-year, unlimited-mileage anti-rust cover.
By extending the mileage limit rather than the time period, BYD is directly addressing concerns around high-mileage use, particularly for drivers who rely on their vehicles daily or plan to keep them long term.
Inside the BYD Blade battery
The Blade battery is central to BYD’s electric vehicle strategy. Built using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, it avoids the use of nickel and cobalt, making it both more sustainable and less vulnerable to raw material price fluctuations.
BYD says the Blade battery has been proven to exceed 3,000 charge and discharge cycles. In real-world terms, that equates to a potential service life of close to 750,000 miles, far beyond the distance most cars will ever cover.
Safety and packaging are also key advantages. The Blade battery is slimmer than many conventional EV battery packs, allowing it to take up around 50 percent less cabin space. This design helps maximise interior room without compromising structural integrity.
BYD models using Blade battery technology
In the UK, Blade battery technology is already used across a growing range of BYD vehicles. Current models include the Dolphin Surf, Dolphin, Seal, Atto 2, Atto 3, Seal U and Sealion 7, all of which benefit from the same extended battery coverage.
This consistency across the lineup simplifies ownership and strengthens BYD’s brand message around reliability and long-term value.
BYD’s growing momentum in the global EV market
BYD’s warranty expansion comes amid rapid global growth. In 2025, the company outsold Tesla for the first time worldwide, marking a significant milestone in the electric vehicle race.
The Chinese manufacturer is now accelerating its model rollout in the UK, with several new vehicles planned for launch in 2026. Among them is the upcoming Sealion 5 plug-in hybrid, expected to arrive with a starting price just under £30,000 and the same 155,000-mile battery warranty.
Why this matters for EV buyers
Battery longevity remains one of the biggest concerns for prospective EV owners. By offering one of the longest mileage-based battery warranties in the industry, BYD is directly challenging rivals and lowering the perceived risk of switching to electric or plug-in hybrid power.
For consumers, the message is clear: BYD expects its Blade battery to last the life of the car, and it is willing to stand behind that claim with meaningful warranty support.
