Hycan Automobile Technology (Chinese: 合创汽车科技有限公司) was a Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer headquartered in Guangzhou, China. Initially launched as a joint venture between GAC Group and Nio Inc., the brand aimed to compete in the rapidly growing EV market in China. However, financial struggles and ownership changes ultimately led to Hycan’s dissolution in 2025.

History

Founding and Joint Venture with Nio

On April 10, 2018, GAC Group, GAC New Energy Technology (now GAC Aion), and Nio Inc. established a joint venture named GAC-Nio New Energy Technology Co., Ltd.. The objective was to combine GAC’s automotive expertise with Nio’s premium EV technology, aiming to create a new electric vehicle brand.

Ownership Changes and Nio’s Exit

In early 2021, Guangdong Pearl River Investment Management Group became the largest shareholder of GAC-Nio, which significantly diluted Nio’s stake in Hycan to 4.5%. Later that year, GAC-Nio rebranded itself as Hycan, signifying its transition into an independent EV company.

By 2022, Nio completely exited Hycan, selling its remaining shares. This marked the beginning of financial instability, as Hycan struggled to establish itself independently.

Dissolution in 2025

On January 11, 2025, GAC Group confirmed Hycan’s closure, stating that it was handling employee placements based on its investment ratio. Additionally, GAC Aion took over the after-sales service of Hycan vehicles, officially marking the brand as defunct.

Technology & Features

‘Little Can’ AI Assistant

Hycan vehicles were equipped with an advanced AI assistant called ‘Little Can’ (小CAN, Xiǎo Cān), similar to Nio’s NOMI AI system.

Key Functions of Little Can AI:
✔ Navigation Control – Helps find and set destinations.
✔ Music Management – Controls in-car audio and playlists.
✔ Climate Control – Adjusts cabin temperature via voice command.
✔ Voice Assistance – Executes various driver and passenger requests.
✔ Cabin Selfie Mode – Uses an integrated cabin camera to capture passenger selfies.

The AI system was deeply integrated into Hycan’s infotainment and vehicle management systems, allowing a seamless smart-driving experience.

Challenges and Downfall

Despite its initial promise, Hycan faced multiple challenges that led to its eventual closure in 2025.

1. Lack of Brand Identity

  • Many of Hycan’s models were seen as rebranded versions of GAC Aion vehicles.
  • Customers found little differentiation between Hycan and GAC Aion’s existing lineup.

2. Nio’s Withdrawal

  • Nio’s exit in 2022 removed a crucial technology partner.
  • Without Nio’s influence, Hycan struggled to maintain its premium positioning.

3. Financial Instability

  • As an independent brand, Hycan lacked the resources to sustain long-term production.
  • Limited sales and heavy competition from BYD, XPeng, and Tesla led to declining demand.

Legacy of Hycan

Although Hycan ceased operations, it played a key role in China’s evolving EV market by demonstrating the importance of joint ventures in automotive innovation.

✔ Introduced AI-based smart assistants in mid-range EVs.
✔ Showcased how collaborations between traditional automakers and tech firms can create new brands.
✔ Highlighted the challenges of surviving in China’s competitive EV industry.

Following Hycan’s closure, GAC Aion took over after-sales services, ensuring that existing Hycan owners could still receive support.

Conclusion

Hycan entered the electric vehicle market with strong backing from GAC Group and Nio, aiming to be a key player in China’s new energy vehicle sector. However, ownership changes, branding challenges, and financial struggles ultimately led to its dissolution in 2025.

While Hycan no longer exists as an independent company, its innovations, AI technologies, and early contributions to China’s EV industry remain significant.
