How China Became the World Leader in Electric Vehicles—and Why It Matters Globally

In China today, owning an electric vehicle (EV) is no longer a luxury—it’s the norm. With nearly half of all new car sales in 2024 being electric, China has transformed its roads into quiet, emission-free corridors, setting a global benchmark in green transportation.

For drivers like Lu Yunfeng, an EV makes sense economically. “I drive an electric vehicle because I’m poor,” he says. “Charging is cheaper than petrol, and it’s good for the environment.”

It’s a stark contrast to perceptions in the West, where EVs are often seen as expensive gadgets for the elite.

The Master Plan: From Bicycles to EVs

China’s journey began more than two decades ago. The shift was accelerated by Wan Gang, a former engineer who led the Ministry of Science and Technology. Realizing China couldn’t compete in petrol engine technology dominated by Western and Japanese firms, he pushed for a radical shift to electrics.

From 2009 to 2023, China spent an estimated $231 billion developing its EV ecosystem, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). This includes subsidies for manufacturers, consumers, charging infrastructure, and battery supply chains.

“When it comes to EVs, China is 10 years ahead and 10 times better than any other country,” says auto expert Michael Dunne.

BYD and XPeng: Local Brands Go Global

Chinese automaker BYD has now overtaken Tesla as the world’s top EV seller. It benefited from early government incentives and a massive domestic market. Startups like XPeng, while still unprofitable, are already among the top 10 global EV manufacturers, delivering affordable cars with premium features like autonomous driving and entertainment systems.

These companies also invest in battery technology, with CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd) supplying batteries to global brands like Tesla, Volkswagen, and Ford.

Infrastructure at Scale

China’s EV success is also tied to its extensive public charging network—the largest in the world. In cities like Guangzhou and Shanghai, charging points and battery-swap stations are minutes away, making EV use seamless for everyday drivers.

Buyers enjoy tax breaks, free registration plates, and even subsidized charging rates. Some cities have introduced automated battery-swapping stations that replace a car’s battery in under three minutes.

Why the West Is Worried

Western countries, while praising the environmental shift, are increasingly concerned about economic and national security risks. The US, Canada, and the EU have already imposed tariffs on Chinese EV imports to protect local industries.

British intelligence officials have even raised alarms about Chinese cars being “computers on wheels,” raising concerns about data security—an accusation BYD strongly denies, citing robust data protection and use of local carriers.

Still, with countries like the UK planning to ban petrol and diesel cars by 2030, Chinese EVs could play a critical role in that transition. Affordable models like the XPeng G6 and BYD Dolphin Surf are already entering global markets.

“The world should thank China for bringing this technology to the world,” laughs Sun Jingguo, an EV driver in Guangzhou.https://www.bbc.com/reel/video/p0lp4dpl/why-china-is-winning-the-global-ev-race
