Ola Electric has taken a significant step towards expanding its electric vehicle portfolio by filing a design patent for its first electric car in India. The patent reveals a compact, four-door hatchback with a modern, minimalist design. This urban-focused car shares some visual elements with the MG Comet EV, featuring a tallboy stance, efficient space usage, and cutting-edge LED light bars. It will be built on Ola Electric’s upcoming Gen 4 modular platform, which is designed to support a range of electric vehicles, including scooters, three-wheelers, and passenger cars.

Ola Electric EV Car: Powered by Indigenous Technology

The upcoming Ola Electric EV car will be powered by Ola’s self-developed 4680 Bharat battery cells, which have been validated by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). The car will also feature a 16 kW electric motor, promising a 15% increase in energy efficiency compared to the previous Gen 3 platform.

This development marks a major shift for Ola Electric as it aims to become a full-spectrum electric vehicle manufacturer. The new car is part of a broader strategy to produce vehicles that serve urban consumers, addressing energy needs while creating green job opportunities.

Ola Electric Faces Criticism Over Its Scooters

While Ola Electric’s foray into the car market is garnering attention, the company’s electric scooters have faced significant criticism. Users frequently complain about battery issues, unreliable performance, and poor after-sales service. Incidents such as unexpected brake engagements and scooter malfunctions have raised safety concerns.

These challenges have led to public frustration, with many urging the company to improve the quality of its scooters before expanding into the car market. Despite the growing pains in the scooter segment, Ola Electric remains focused on its long-term vision to revolutionize the electric vehicle landscape in India.

Challenges and Opportunities in Ola’s EV Journey

Ola Electric is at a crossroads. While the company’s expansion into the EV car market shows ambitious growth plans, stakeholder confidence largely depends on its ability to resolve the ongoing issues with its scooters. Improving product quality, strengthening customer support, and enhancing after-sales infrastructure will be crucial for building brand trust.

Despite these challenges, Ola Electric’s push into the four-wheeler market presents substantial opportunities. The Ola Electric EV car could capture the growing demand for green mobility in India, as more consumers seek sustainable alternatives. However, the company will need to ensure that its scooters are fully reliable before it can leverage the momentum from its car launch.
