£1bn Battery Plant in Sunderland to Power 100,000 EVs and Create 1,000 Jobs

The UK government has secured a £1 billion investment for a state-of-the-art electric car battery plant in Sunderland, set to support the nation’s clean energy transition and create 1,000 skilled jobs in the North East.

Located at the International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP) in Washington, the gigafactory will be the second facility in Sunderland by AESC UK, Nissan’s trusted battery partner. Once operational, the site is expected to produce enough batteries to power 100,000 electric vehicles (EVs) annually, solidifying the UK’s position in the global EV market.

Strategic Boost Following UK-US Trade Deal

The announcement follows a recent economic deal between the UK and the United States that slashed car export tariffs, paving the way for a more competitive automotive sector. During her site visit, Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves praised the project as a win for innovation, sustainability, and regional job creation.

“This investment in Sunderland will not only advance our journey toward sustainable transport but also deliver high-quality, well-paid jobs to the North East,” Reeves stated.

Government Backs EV Future with Funding and Policy

Plans for the plant received final approval in September 2024, after navigating environmental and land-use reviews due to its partial placement on green belt land. The UK government is also contributing £150 million in grant funding through its Automotive Transformation Fund, reflecting its strong commitment to the green energy transition.

Officials say the Sunderland gigafactory will play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and enhancing energy security as part of the UK’s broader net-zero strategy.

Pushing for Global Competitiveness

The new facility is not just a win for Sunderland but a key piece in the UK’s national plan to become a global leader in electric vehicle technology and production. As global demand for EVs accelerates, strategic investments like this aim to position the UK at the forefront of innovation and clean energy manufacturing.
