The BYD Han L ultra-fast charging EV has officially arrived, pushing boundaries with a record-breaking recharge speed. BYD unveiled the vehicle in Shenzhen, China, showcasing its ability to add 400 km (248 miles) of range in just five minutes. This launch marks a major leap forward in electric vehicle convenience.
At the core of the Han L is BYD’s new Super e-Platform, operating at 1,000 volts. This allows the sedan to reach peak charging speeds of 1,000 kW, doubling Tesla’s latest Supercharger output. Practically speaking, the car can gain 2 km of range per second, reducing recharge stops to the length of a coffee break.
To achieve these speeds, BYD fitted the Han L with dual charging ports, often referred to as “two charge guns.” These ports enable simultaneous energy delivery at a 10C rate, or ten times the battery’s capacity per hour. This technology sets a new benchmark for the EV market.
During the launch event, BYD founder Wang Chuanfu emphasized the company’s vision. “We want EV charging to be as fast as refueling a gasoline car,” he said. Furthermore, BYD has pledged to support this innovation with over 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China.
In terms of performance, the Han L delivers more than just speed at the charger. The sedan uses an 83.2 kWh Blade battery, known for durability and safety. It offers a range of up to 701 km (435 miles) on China’s CLTC cycle, and over 500 km (311 miles) under more global testing standards.
Despite the large battery, the vehicle can fully recharge in just 20 minutes. This makes the Han L nearly 10 times faster than standard 50 kW fast-chargers. Unlike many rivals, the Han L offers both long range and ultra-fast charging, removing the need to compromise.
Performance doesn’t end with the battery. The top-tier version features dual motors producing 810 kW (over 1,080 hp). It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds. Even the entry-level model boasts 500 kW (670 hp) and hits 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds.
BYD also launched the Tang L SUV, built on the same architecture. With a 100.5 kWh battery, it gains 370 km of range in five minutes and charges from 0–100% in under 30 minutes. This proves that ultra-fast charging can benefit larger vehicles as well.
Inside, the Han L features a luxury-grade cabin, combining minimalism with advanced technology. It includes a large central touchscreen, ambient lighting, and a panoramic moonroof. BYD’s “God’s Eye” smart driving system, supported by LiDAR and DiPilot 300 software, enables semi-autonomous features such as Navigate-on-Autopilot.
Additionally, the car offers over-the-air updates, vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, and a dual-port design to make high-speed charging more accessible. Even the styling supports function, with aerodynamic elements like flush door handles to boost efficiency.
What’s equally remarkable is the pricing. The Han L starts at ¥219,800 (~$30,000 USD) in China. The high-performance variant costs around ¥279,800 (~$38,000 USD). These prices undercut many premium EVs while offering superior technology and range.
For now, BYD will sell the Han L and Tang L only in China. Deliveries are expected to begin in the coming weeks. However, the company has plans to expand into Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. The U.S. remains a difficult market due to trade tensions and tariffs.
When compared to fast-charging rivals, the Han L stands out. The XPeng G9 charges at 480 kW, adding 200 km in five minutes. Tesla’s V3 Superchargers peak at 250 kW and add 150 km in the same time. Even the Porsche Taycan, with its 800V architecture, takes over 20 minutes to reach 80%.
Clearly, the BYD Han L ultra-fast charging EV leads in both speed and performance. Nevertheless, the infrastructure to support 1,000 kW charging is still limited. Most global networks max out at 350–500 kW. Even so, BYD’s launch will likely pressure networks and competitors to upgrade.
Experts believe this could transform charging behavior. If drivers can reliably recharge in minutes, long-distance EV travel becomes seamless. This could mark a turning point in how people use and perceive electric vehicles.
Outlook
The BYD Han L signals a bold shift in EV innovation. With unmatched charging speed, extended range, powerful specs, and competitive pricing, it raises the bar for the global market. As infrastructure catches up and global rollout expands, the Han L may very well redefine the standard for electric mobility.
