Volvo’s Future EREV SUV: What We Know So Far

Volvo has hinted at its future in electric mobility with plans for a large EREV SUV in the U.S., an important step for the brand’s electric and hybrid future. EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) technology has been catching the attention of automakers, and Volvo is no exception. As the company moves toward a greener future, the new SUV is expected to combine the benefits of electric driving with the convenience of a gas-powered engine acting as a generator.

EREVs offer the best of both worlds: an electric platform paired with a gasoline engine that doesn’t power the wheels but simply recharges the battery. For many buyers, this offers a way to reduce range anxiety and make the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) more seamless.

What Is an EREV?

An EREV is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) with a twist. Unlike traditional PHEVs, which use a gas engine to help power the wheels, an EREV’s gas engine is only used to recharge the battery, not to propel the car. This makes EREVs closer to pure electric vehicles in their performance and driving experience, with the added benefit of extended range when needed.

For example, the Chevrolet Volt was one of the most well-known EREVs, with an electric motor that powered the wheels but relied on a gas engine to recharge its battery during longer trips. Volvo is taking a similar approach for its future SUV, offering a fast acceleration experience and a driving feel closer to a pure EV.

Why Go EREV?

Many buyers are still hesitant about fully electric driving, due to concerns about EV prices, range limitations, and charging infrastructure. EREVs meet those concerns head-on by offering an electric-first experience with the added safety net of a gas engine for recharging. This hybrid approach appeals to buyers transitioning to electric mobility without giving up the flexibility of longer trips.

In particular, Volvo is positioning its next-generation EREV SUV as a solution for the U.S. market, where large SUVs and crossovers are increasingly popular. These vehicles would benefit from the efficiency of electric power but the peace of mind of extended range provided by a gas engine.

Volvo’s Strategy: Tapping Into Geely’s Synergy

As Volvo’s parent company, Geely is making strides in EREV technology. This strategy is part of a broader push to bring hybrid and electric technologies to a larger customer base, particularly in markets like China, where Geely has already succeeded with EREVs.

The integration of Geely’s technology into Volvo’s future vehicles will ensure that the Swedish automaker can leverage a global platform for the development of its next-generation EREVs. This collaboration will likely result in synergies across Volvo’s and Geely’s platforms, ultimately reducing development costs and improving product consistency.

Driving Experience and Performance

Volvo’s future EREV SUV will likely offer smooth acceleration and a refined driving experience. The Zeekr 9X, a vehicle in the Geely umbrella, has already shown how well an EREV system can perform, with a large battery and electric motors that ensure powerful, engine-off driving. The hybrid engine system will kick in only when necessary to boost acceleration or extend the vehicle’s range, making it seamless for everyday drivers.

Though the final details for Volvo’s U.S. EREV are still under wraps, the expectation is that the vehicle will perform similarly to the Lynk & Co 900, which combines electric propulsion and gasoline engine support to offer a truly hybrid driving experience.

What Does This Mean for Volvo?

The move to create an EREV SUV signals Volvo’s continued commitment to sustainability and reduced environmental impact. By leveraging Geely’s platform for their next-generation vehicles, Volvo can stay competitive while addressing the practical concerns of buyers.

The potential for success in the U.S. market with EREVs will likely influence the direction of other Volvo models in the future. As more consumers embrace electric driving, Volvo is positioning itself as a leader in the transition, offering a blend of technology, luxury, and flexibility.
