Volkswagen Teases Affordable Electric SUV for the Masses

Volkswagen is preparing to unveil a new affordable electric SUV, promising to bring budget-friendly EVs to a wider audience. The concept will debut on September 7 at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich.

The upcoming crossover draws inspiration from the ID.2all hatchback, introduced in 2023 with a bold €25,000 target price. Since global demand for SUVs keeps rising, Volkswagen plans to launch a higher-riding version as an accessible entry point in its growing EV lineup. This model will slot below the larger ID.4, giving buyers a cheaper but practical choice.

Design and Dimensions

A design sketch shows a boxy silhouette with SUV proportions more traditional than the sleek ID.4. The drawing highlights EV cues such as full-width light bars and an illuminated VW badge. Although the oversized wheels and flush doors signal concept flair, production versions will include conventional handles and rugged cladding around the wheel arches.

The new model mirrors the ID.2all’s footprint: 4,050 mm long and 1,812 mm wide. That size makes it similar to the VW T-Cross, but the dedicated EV platform should deliver extra cabin space, improving practicality.

Platform and Performance

This compact SUV rides on a modified MEB platform, tuned for front-wheel drive instead of the larger ID.3 and ID.4’s rear-drive setups. This shift lowers costs and simplifies engineering.

The ID.2all concept used a 222 hp motor, accelerating from 0–100 km/h in under seven seconds. A similar setup is expected here, offering strong performance for urban and family driving.

Pricing Strategy

The crossover will cost slightly more than the €25,000 hatchback, but Volkswagen aims to keep it below €40,000. This ensures the SUV remains competitive against rivals while opening EV ownership to a broader market.

Volkswagen is also developing an ID.1 model, set to launch in 2026 with a starting price near €20,000. Meanwhile, the company reported a 47% increase in EV sales in the first half of this year, signaling strong momentum behind its electrification strategy.

The Volkswagen affordable electric SUV is not just another model—it represents the brand’s push to bring electric mobility to the masses.
