Hyundai Kona Electric to Skip 2026 Model Year Amid Sales Struggles

The Hyundai Kona Electric will take a break from the U.S. market. The smallest and most affordable electric car from Hyundai will not see a 2026 model year, as production in South Korea has temporarily paused. A spokesperson confirmed this to Car and Driver.

Hyundai has not directly cited the reason for the hiatus, but low sales seem to be the key factor. The spokesperson explained that the 2025 model year Kona Electric has enough stock to meet current demand. Essentially, it doesn’t make sense to keep producing new cars if the existing inventory remains unsold.

Declining Sales Lead to the Hiatus

In 2025, Hyundai sold 3,011 Kona EVs in the U.S., a 41% drop from the previous year, according to Cox Automotive. Although Hyundai doesn’t release sales numbers for the Kona Electric individually, this steep decline shows weak consumer interest. It seems Hyundai has not met the expected demand for the Kona Electric, prompting the company to halt production.

However, the Kona Electric isn’t gone for good. Hyundai confirmed that production will resume for the 2027 model year in June, with the new version expected to share similar features with the 2025 and 2026 models. The 2027 Kona Electric will likely use the same battery options and trims.

What’s Happening with the 2026 Kona Electric?

Hyundai revealed the 2026 Kona Electric as a carry-over model, but it has now been postponed. The 2026 version would have been available in only one trim with the smallest battery. The only change was a larger console tray in the cabin. Due to this lack of significant updates, the 2026 Kona Electric did not excite consumers, leading Hyundai to pause its production.

While the hiatus is temporary, Hyundai still plans to bring the Kona Electric back. The 2027 version will likely maintain the same battery options and trims but could include slight updates when it re-enters the market later this year.

Challenges Facing the Electric Vehicle Market

Hyundai’s decision to pause Kona Electric production reflects broader challenges in the electric vehicle market. Many automakers are reassessing their EV strategies. Volkswagen has paused its ID. Buzz minivan for 2026, while Ford and Ram have canceled their electric pickup models.

As electric vehicle adoption rises, automakers face fierce competition and must determine which models will succeed. Hyundai’s Kona Electric hiatus shows how manufacturers are adjusting to these changing dynamics.
