2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5: The EV That Keeps Getting It Right

The competition in the EV market is tough, but the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is tougher. It continues to be a top pick for InsideEVs’ Editor’s Choice Awards, and here’s why.

Why the Ioniq 5 Deserved the Vote

At the InsideEVs Breakthrough Awards, the 2026 Nissan Leaf won the Car of the Year Award, but I was in the minority. I made the case for the Ioniq 5 to take home the top honor instead. While I appreciate the Leaf’s progress, the Ioniq 5 remains the EV I’d recommend to most American buyers. This year, it became even harder to justify recommending anything else.

The Ioniq 5 has been impressive since its debut in 2021, standing out in a time when many electric vehicles were still experimental. Its unique design, long-range capabilities, fast-charging speeds, and practicality put it on par with, and in some areas, ahead of, the Tesla Model Y. Nearly five years later, it still holds that position.

Hyundai Continues to Innovate

The Ioniq 5 impressed in 2025 with substantial upgrades: a larger battery offering up to 318 miles of range, faster DC charging with a Tesla-style NACS plug, and a more user-friendly interior with improved physical controls and better space utilization. The car now charges up in under 20 minutes, making it even more convenient for everyday use.

Unlike Tesla, which relies on an interface that can be challenging for new users, the Ioniq 5 offers a simpler, more intuitive experience. It’s a car that’s easy to hop into and drive, making it a prime candidate for anyone looking to adopt an EV without the learning curve.

The Price Is Right

Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 stands out not only for its performance but also for its pricing. The single-motor version starts at just $38,000, with a dual-motor version priced at $41,000. These prices put it in close competition with the Nissan Leaf, but the Ioniq 5 offers more power, range, and fun driving dynamics at a similar price point. Hyundai has also managed to reduce the Ioniq 5’s price by nearly $10,000, making it an even better value for buyers.

A Diverse Lineup for Every Driver

Hyundai has made sure there’s an Ioniq 5 for everyone. For those who need extra durability and off-road capability, the Ioniq 5 XRT offers Subaru-like all-weather performance. For drivers seeking a more performance-oriented option, the Ioniq 5 N delivers the speed and handling that could rival many sports cars. Hyundai’s commitment to offering a robust range of options is a significant advantage for those shopping for an EV.

Still Room for Improvement

Despite its many strengths, the Ioniq 5 isn’t perfect. Some users may find the infotainment system and navigation features lacking compared to competitors like Tesla. The car’s software ecosystem, while functional, doesn’t offer the same cohesiveness as Tesla’s, and the Ioniq 5’s navigation system has been criticized for its sometimes baffling decisions.

Hyundai’s lack of hands-free highway driving tech, like GM’s Super Cruise or Ford’s BlueCruise, is also a notable omission. However, the Ioniq 5 remains an excellent choice for anyone looking for a practical and affordable electric vehicle.

2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5: The EV for the Masses

In the highly competitive EV market, the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 stands out as one of the best values on the market. It combines excellent range, fast-charging capabilities, and impressive pricing, making it a strong contender for anyone considering a new EV. As Hyundai continues to innovate and improve the Ioniq 5, it’s easy to see why it remains one of the best EV options in America today.
