Denza, BYD’s premium new energy vehicle brand, has launched four new variants of the Denza D9 MPV at the 2025 Chengdu Auto Show. The updated lineup features lower starting prices, improved hybrid technology, and enhanced range, making the Denza D9 MPV more accessible while strengthening its position in China’s competitive premium MPV market.
The new models include three plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variants and one battery electric vehicle (BEV) option. The most affordable Denza D9 MPV PHEV now starts at RMB 309,800 ($43,450), down from RMB 339,800 when the model relaunched in December 2024. The other PHEV trims are priced at RMB 329,800 and RMB 459,800. Meanwhile, the BEV variant begins at RMB 319,800, a notable reduction from its previous RMB 379,800 starting price.
This price cut makes the Denza D9 MPV significantly more competitive against rivals like the Li Auto MEGA and GAC M8. Moreover, it reflects Denza’s strategy to boost volume by appealing to cost-conscious buyers without sacrificing premium features.
The updated PHEV models use BYD’s fifth-generation DM-i hybrid system, known for its efficiency and smooth performance. The powertrain combines a 1.5L engine with an electric motor, delivering a maximum power output of 115 kW. Each PHEV version comes with a 40-kWh battery pack, offering a CLTC electric-only range of 190 km or 200 km. When the tank is full and the battery is charged, the combined range reaches 1,020 km or 1,100 km, making long-distance travel seamless.
For electric-only drivers, the Denza D9 MPV BEV is equipped with a 103-kWh BYD Blade Battery, engineered for safety, durability, and thermal stability. It delivers a CLTC-rated range of 620 km, which is sufficient for daily use and intercity trips, especially with growing fast-charging infrastructure.
The Denza D9 MPV is the brand’s first model, originally launched in August 2022 with deliveries beginning in October that year. Since then, it has become the cornerstone of Denza’s product lineup. In addition to the D9, the brand now offers the N7 and N9 SUVs and the Z9 GT sedan, expanding into multiple premium segments.
Recent sales data shows strong demand for the D9. Denza sold 11,375 vehicles in July 2025, a 10.01% increase year-on-year. However, this was a 27.93% drop from June, likely due to seasonal fluctuations or production timing. Of that total, 8,331 units were D9 MPVs, confirming its role as the brand’s top-selling model. The N9 SUV followed with 2,104 units, the Z9 series with 816, and the N7 SUV with 124.
Despite the monthly dip, the Denza D9 MPV continues to dominate its segment by offering a balanced mix of luxury, space, efficiency, and technology. It appeals to families, business users, and fleet operators who value comfort and reliability.
Inside, the D9 features premium materials, advanced climate control, rear-seat entertainment, and a comprehensive driver assistance suite. These features reinforce its high-end positioning in a market where comfort and tech are key decision factors.
Furthermore, the updated variants enhance Denza’s flexibility in a fast-evolving NEV landscape. As consumers shift toward electrified vehicles, having both PHEV and BEV options allows Denza to serve diverse needs — from urban EV drivers to those in areas with limited charging.
Therefore, the refreshed Denza D9 MPV is more than just a price adjustment. It is a strategic move to increase market share, respond to competition, and solidify Denza’s reputation for quality and innovation. With proven technology from BYD and strong customer demand, the D9 remains a leading contender in China’s premium MPV segment.
As Denza continues to expand its lineup and refine its offerings, the success of the Denza D9 MPV will likely shape the brand’s trajectory in the years ahead.
