Chinese auto leader BYD has officially launched the BYD U8L SUV — a six-seat ultra-luxury flagship that blends brute power, sci-fi features, and a €154,000 price tag. First deliveries begin late September. And yes — it can float. In fact, that’s just the start of what this machine can do.
The U8L is the stretched version of BYD’s Yangwang U8. At 5.4 meters long and 2.05 meters wide, it’s not just big — it’s imposing. Moreover, the wheelbase stretches to 3,250 mm — a full 200 mm longer than the standard U8. Inside, three rows of premium seats await — wrapped in leather, tech, and near-silent comfort.

Under the skin? BYD’s e4 platform — powered by four electric motors (one per wheel). Together, they churn out 1,180 horsepower and 1,280 Nm of torque. Despite weighing over 3 tons, the BYD U8L SUV rockets from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds. To put that in perspective — that’s supercar speed, packed into an SUV taller than most sedans.
But here’s the twist: it’s not fully electric. Specifically, the U8L is an EREV — Extended-Range Electric Vehicle. A 200 km CLTC-rated battery handles daily drives. Meanwhile, a gasoline engine acts as a generator for longer trips. As a result, total range climbs to 1,160 km. No range anxiety. Just seamless, unstoppable power.

Then come the headline features — the ones that sound like they’re straight out of a spy thriller. First: “emergency flotation mode.” Drive into floodwaters? The U8L seals itself and floats — buying you critical time to escape or wait for rescue. Second: “tank turn.” Thanks to individual wheel control, the SUV spins 360 degrees in place — like a military vehicle. Third: “blown tire stability.” Lose a tire at speed? The system compensates instantly — keeping you safe until you pull over.
Ride comfort? That’s handled by BYD’s DiSus-P intelligent suspension. It reads the road 1,000 times per second — adjusting dampers in real time. Consequently, bumps vanish. Potholes? Barely felt. The result? A magic carpet ride — even on broken pavement.
Inside, tech takes center stage. The latest “God’s Eye A” smart driving system pairs with DiPilot 600 — BYD’s most advanced driver assist suite. This means smoother lane-keeping, smarter adaptive cruise, and more confident automated parking — all working together to reduce driver stress.
The U8L is the fourth model from Yangwang — BYD’s ultra-luxury sub-brand. It joins the U8 SUV (€132K), the U9 supercar (€201K), and the U7 sedan (€75K). Admittedly, sales are still small — just 405 units in August. But BYD isn’t chasing volume. Instead, it’s chasing prestige. Profit. Global presence.
Legacy automakers — Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Maybach — now have a new rival. One that offers more power. More innovation. More theater. And yes — a car that literally floats.
In short, the BYD U8L SUV isn’t just transportation. Above all, it’s a statement. A flex. A glimpse of where luxury is headed — bold, electric, and utterly unexpected.
