Volvo has issued a recall notice for 2,815 of its EX30 electric vehicles sold in Australia during 2024 due to a serious fire risk. The recall, issued by the federal transport department, affects owners of the small SUVs, who are now being instructed to limit their car’s battery charge to avoid overheating and potential fires.
The Battery Fault
The issue stems from a manufacturing defect in the high-voltage battery of the affected Volvo EX30 models. According to the recall notice, the cell modules within the battery may overheat at high charge levels, potentially leading to a fire hazard. Volvo has assured owners that the vehicles can still be used while waiting for a permanent solution, but it is crucial to keep the battery charge level below 70% to reduce the risk.
How to Manage the Issue
To mitigate the risk, Volvo advises all affected drivers to adjust the battery settings in their vehicles, setting a maximum charging level of 70% through the car’s on-screen menus. This temporary measure will help prevent the battery from reaching dangerous charge levels while the automaker works on developing a fix.
Once a solution is ready, Volvo will contact affected customers and schedule free repairs to resolve the issue.
Volvo’s Global Recall
This recall follows similar actions in other countries. Volvo began warning drivers in late December and early January about the battery fault. The company has also issued a recall in South Africa. In the UK, Volvo clarified that the battery issue affects only a small percentage of the EX30 models, with no reported injuries linked to the defect. The company stated that safety remains a top priority, despite the issue affecting only 0.02% of the vehicles identified.
Volvo’s Reputation in Australia
Volvo is one of Australia’s leading electric vehicle brands, with the EX30 ranking as the 14th highest-selling EV in 2025, according to Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries figures. The recall of these 2,815 cars is significant but underscores the company’s commitment to safety and customer support.
Volvo owners with affected vehicles are encouraged to follow the recall instructions closely and monitor any updates from the company regarding the availability of the repair solution.
