Mitsubishi Foxconn EV Partnership Targets Australia, NZ

The Mitsubishi Foxconn EV partnership marks a significant development in global electric vehicle expansion. Mitsubishi Motors Corp. has signed a memorandum of understanding with Foxtron Vehicle Technologies, a subsidiary of Taiwan’s tech giant Foxconn, to supply EVs for Australia and New Zealand starting in the second half of 2025.

According to Mitsubishi, further talks are underway with Foxtron—officially a part of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.—to solidify production and rollout plans. Taiwanese carmaker Yulon Motor Co. will manufacture the EVs, leveraging Taiwan’s efficient production networks and strong EV capabilities.

Symbolic Shift in the Mitsubishi Foxconn EV Partnership

This Mitsubishi Foxconn EV partnership signals a cultural shift in Japanese automotive strategy. Historically, Japanese carmakers like Mitsubishi avoided outsourcing manufacturing, especially to companies outside the traditional auto sector. Partnering with Foxconn, known primarily for electronics, breaks from that legacy and suggests a more open, flexible manufacturing model.

With Foxconn aiming to establish itself as a major EV player, this partnership gives both companies a fast-track into the Asia-Pacific market, especially in countries like Australia and New Zealand that are ramping up EV adoption.

Expansion to North America Through Strategic Alliances

Mitsubishi also announced plans to collaborate further with Nissan. The automaker will launch EVs built on Nissan’s next-generation Leaf platform, with an expected debut in North America by late 2026. Mitsubishi will additionally supply one of its plug-in hybrid vehicles to Nissan for the same market, reinforcing their strategy to share technologies and diversify EV offerings.

Despite the collapse of a proposed merger between Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi, the companies remain in talks to collaborate on EV software development and other innovation areas. Industry experts suggest the Foxconn deal could be a catalyst for deeper tech-industry partnerships among Japan’s auto giants.

Looking Forward

The Mitsubishi Foxconn EV partnership gives both companies a chance to accelerate their EV ambitions. Mitsubishi gains quick access to new markets with low capital risk, while Foxconn strengthens its foothold in the EV space. Yulon’s involvement ensures quality production rooted in Taiwan’s advanced manufacturing base.

With EV competition intensifying, and infrastructure improving across Asia-Pacific, this partnership could set a precedent for more collaborations between automakers and tech giants. It also leaves room for future expansion into North America and beyond.
