The Mercedes-AMG GT XX has redefined electric car performance. It smashed 25 global records in one testing campaign. Most impressively, it covered 3,405 miles in 24 hours, beating the XPeng P7 by nearly 1,000 miles.
Distance Records at Nardò
Testing took place at Italy’s Nardò Ring. Two prototypes ran at a steady 186 mph for nearly eight days. They relied on 850 kW charging, which minimized downtime.
As a result, the AMG EVs achieved an incredible milestone. Together, they traveled 24,901 miles in 7 days and 13 hours, matching the Earth’s circumference. In addition, they surpassed 25,000 miles soon after. Along the way, they set time-based records at 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, and 168 hours.
AMG GT XX Powertrain Innovation
The concept car uses three Yasa axial flux motors. These deliver over 1,360 horsepower. Two sit at the rear while one at the front boosts traction. However, the car operates mainly in rear-wheel drive to conserve energy.
The battery is just as advanced. It uses NCMA cylindrical cells with an energy density of 300 Wh/kg. Moreover, a unique oil cooling system regulates each of the 3,000+ cells. Thanks to its 800V+ design, the AMG EV accepts charging at more than 850 kW. Consequently, it can recover 248 miles of range in five minutes.
Design and Aerodynamics
The AMG GT XX concept also introduces adaptive aerodynamics. Bluetooth-controlled wings adjust in real time. This improves stability and reduces drag. In addition, the lightweight chassis and cooling systems allowed the car to run without failures for nearly eight days.
Record-Breaking Team Effort
Seventeen drivers worked in two-hour shifts. Among them was Formula 1 driver George Russell. Their teamwork was essential, since both cars finished the challenge within two laps of each other.
Future of Mercedes EVs
Although a concept, the AMG GT XX previews the production AMG GT four-door EV. Furthermore, its technology will trickle down to future Mercedes-Benz electric cars. That means shorter charging times and longer ranges for everyday drivers. As a result, range anxiety and charge concerns could become issues of the past.
Conclusion
The Mercedes-AMG GT XX has changed the conversation around performance EVs. With 25 records broken, lightning-fast charging, and cutting-edge aerodynamics, it proves what the future of Mercedes electrification looks like.
