Electric Porsche Macan Review and Insights

The Electric Porsche Macan is Porsche’s answer to a changing automotive world. As the combustion-engine Macan fades, the new electric model steps in. Buyers have responded strongly. Despite being more expensive, the Macan EV is outselling its gas sibling this year. That success shows that Porsche’s gamble on electrification is paying off.

However, Porsche is cautious. The automaker confirmed it is also developing a new midsize combustion crossover for 2028, though it will not carry the Macan name. This dual strategy highlights how Porsche wants to keep both traditional and electric customers satisfied.

Porsche Macan EV Platform and Design

Unlike the gas-burning Macan, the electric Porsche Macan is not mechanically related. It rides on Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE). This advanced architecture also supports several Audi EVs. Thanks to PPE, the Macan benefits from a 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack, rear-wheel steering, and luxury-class refinement.

The Macan EV’s styling blends practicality with upscale appeal. While it is larger and more grown-up compared to the ICE model, it still retains the Macan’s sporty identity. Buyers gain high-end features while enjoying modern electrification.

Performance and Driving Impressions

InsideEVs Editor-in-Chief Patrick George drove the Macan 4, the dual-motor variant with 402 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This setup launches the SUV to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, with a top speed of 137 mph. While not as dramatic as some rivals, it offers smooth, confident power delivery.

EPA range for the Macan 4 stands at 308 miles. However, large 22-inch wheels reduce this figure. Interestingly, real-world tests showed surprising results. A Macan Turbo on 22-inch wheels beat its EPA estimate, reaching 290 miles at highway speed. Similarly, the base rear-wheel-drive Macan achieved 343 miles on smaller aero wheels, exceeding official claims.

Pricing and Value

The electric Porsche Macan is not cheap. The Macan 4 starts at $81,600, and Patrick George’s well-optioned tester hit $94,855. That is a steep price for an entry-level Porsche SUV. Yet the EV justifies its cost with technology, premium build quality, and long-distance capability.

Still, it is not perfect. Patrick noted that the Macan EV lacks true one-pedal driving, a feature common among rivals. He also felt it could use more excitement at high speed. But these drawbacks do not overshadow its strengths.

How It Compares to the Taycan

Porsche gained valuable EV experience with the Taycan. The Macan EV reflects that learning curve. In many ways, it feels more refined than the Taycan. Its ride quality, practicality, and cohesive design make it a better-rounded product. The Macan proves that Porsche is improving with each new EV.

Conclusion

The electric Porsche Macan shows how far Porsche has come in EV engineering. It combines strong performance, up to 308 miles of range, and high-end features in a package that feels premium and practical. While expensive, it demonstrates Porsche’s confidence in electrification and its ability to improve upon earlier EV models.

As buyers embrace the Macan EV, Porsche’s strategy looks smart. With lessons learned from the Taycan, the company has created an SUV that blends style, range, and performance in a way few competitors can match.
