Li Auto will officially launch its first pure electric SUV, the Li Auto Li i8, on July 29. Founder and CEO Li Xiang made the announcement via Weibo, describing the model as one that will “redefine pure electric SUVs.” The six-seater i8 also marks Li Auto’s second battery electric vehicle (BEV), following the Li Mega MPV that debuted on March 1, 2024.
The Li Auto Li i8 has already drawn attention for its unique look. Although it is labeled an SUV, the design resembles a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). Li Xiang addressed this in his post, stating that some team members initially had doubts. However, the company prioritized passenger comfort, reduced wind resistance, extended range, and stronger safety.
According to Li, Tesla’s Model X was the first vehicle to challenge traditional SUV design. Similarly, the Li i8 will push those boundaries further by making more efficient use of space. As a result, the unconventional appearance is intentional and designed to optimize interior functionality.
Measuring 5,085 mm in length, the Li i8 comes equipped with lithium ternary batteries that support 5C superfast charging. This setup is expected to deliver both convenience and high performance. The vehicle will be the first pure electric SUV in Li Auto’s lineup, which currently includes extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) such as the L6, L7, L8, and L9.
Ahead of the Li i8’s release, the company has accelerated its charging network expansion. As of now, Li Auto operates 2,826 supercharging stations across China. This surpasses its earlier target of 2,500 stations before the Li i8’s launch. The expanded infrastructure will ensure that new i8 drivers have fast-charging access nationwide.
Preparations for the Li i8’s production, training, and delivery are in their final stages. Li Xiang confirmed this update in a Weibo post on June 19. At the same time, regulatory filings have confirmed the vehicle’s dimensions and charging specs, fueling further anticipation.
The Li i8 made its public appearance shortly after rival Zeekr introduced its first hybrid SUV, the Zeekr 9X. However, Li Auto’s focus remains fixed on battery-only power. The i8 represents a bold leap in design and engineering, signaling the company’s confidence in all-electric technology.
With the Li Auto Li i8, the company aims not just to enter the electric SUV market, but to reshape it. From its MPV-style body to cutting-edge 5C charging, the i8 challenges norms while staying true to driver and passenger priorities. As the July 29 launch nears, all eyes are on Li Auto and its vision for the future of premium electric mobility.
