The Tesla Model YL has officially launched in China, bringing an extended-wheelbase version of the popular electric SUV. Tesla hopes this new six-seater model will help the brand stay competitive in China’s rapidly growing EV market, where strong domestic automakers are challenging foreign brands.
Priced from 339,000 yuan (about $47,180), the Tesla Model YL costs roughly $3,500 more than the regular Model Y. Despite the premium, Tesla is betting on the added comfort, increased cargo space, and upgraded features to win over Chinese families seeking a larger, more versatile EV.
Design and Dimensions
The Tesla Model YL stands out with its longer wheelbase of 119.7 inches (3,040 mm), compared to the standard Model Y’s 113.8 inches (2,890 mm). This extension increases the overall length to 195.9 inches (4,976 mm), giving the SUV a sleeker and roomier profile.
This size increase directly translates into more cabin space. The Model YL offers comfortable seating across three rows, with powered armrests for the second row and improved air vents for the third row. Folding the second and third rows expands cargo capacity to a massive 89.7 cubic feet (2,539 liters), compared to 72.1 cubic feet in the standard model.
Comfort and Features
Tesla equipped the Model YL with features focused on passenger comfort. Heated seats are available across all three rows, while the first and second rows also benefit from ventilation. The second-row powered armrests, a feature long requested by Tesla owners, enhance the luxury feel of the cabin.
Passengers in the third row gain extra convenience, with electric buttons that allow the second row to swing forward, making entry and exit easier. Tesla’s improvements highlight its intent to make the YL a family-oriented vehicle.
Performance and Range
Although slightly heavier than the standard version, the Tesla Model YL delivers impressive performance. Equipped with the long-range battery and dual-motor setup, it accelerates from 0–62 mph in 4.5 seconds, just a fraction slower than the standard Y’s 4.3 seconds. Top speed remains 125 mph (201 km/h).
Surprisingly, the YL has a marginally better CLTC range at 751 km (466 miles) compared to 750 km. Tesla also introduced upgraded suspension with continuously variable damping, further enhancing ride comfort.
Market Strategy and Pricing
The Tesla Model YL arrives at a time when Tesla’s market share in China faces pressure. The $3,550 premium over the regular model reflects its expanded space and luxury features. If exported to the U.S., the price difference could reach around $5,000, making it a likely alternative to the larger Model X, which Tesla may phase out soon.
The YL’s arrival also hints at Tesla’s strategy to diversify the Model Y lineup, including a rumored stripped-down variant priced at around $35,000. By broadening options, Tesla is positioning the Model Y as a versatile lineup catering to different budgets and lifestyles.
Outlook
With its improved dimensions, comfort upgrades, and family-friendly design, the Tesla Model YL could become a crucial model for Tesla in China. If introduced in the U.S., it may fill the gap left by the Model X and strengthen Tesla’s SUV dominance.
