The 2026 Toyota bZ has officially entered the U.S. market as a refreshed version of the bZ4X, bringing significant range improvements and updated features. Starting at $36,350, the new lineup caters to mass-market EV buyers while enhancing Toyota’s position in the competitive electric crossover segment.
Interestingly, the entry-level XLE FWD trim is now $2,170 more affordable than the outgoing base bZ4X. However, it comes with a smaller 57.5 kWh battery and delivers an estimated 236 miles of range, slightly less than the 252 miles of last year’s model. Power output also dips to 168 hp compared to 201 hp previously, making this version the most budget-friendly but less powerful option.
Extended Range Across Higher Trims
For all other trims, the 2026 Toyota bZ gains a larger 74.7 kWh battery, up from 72.8 kWh, resulting in notable range improvements.
- XLE FWD Plus: 314 miles of range (+62 miles) at $39,350 (+$830). Power rises to 221 hp.
- XLE AWD: 288 miles of range (+60 miles) at $41,350 (+$750). Dual motors now produce 338 hp, an increase of 124 hp.
- Limited FWD: 299 miles of range (+63 miles) at $44,750 (+$1,500).
- Limited AWD: 278 miles of range (+56 miles) at $46,750 (+$1,420).
These upgrades make the 2026 Toyota bZ a stronger contender in the EV crossover category, offering more driving confidence without massive price hikes.
Charging and Technology Updates
Charging speeds remain a mixed bag. DC fast charging still peaks at 150 kW, lagging behind rivals capable of 300 kW. However, AC home charging has been upgraded from 7.4 kW to 11 kW, allowing for quicker overnight charging when supported by home infrastructure.
Another major update is the addition of a Tesla-style NACS port as standard. This eliminates the need for adapters when accessing Tesla Superchargers or NACS-equipped stations, though a CCS adapter will be required at older stations.
Features and Safety
Toyota has packed the 2026 Toyota bZ with standard features across all trims, including:
- LED daytime running lights and taillights
- Dual-zone automatic climate control
- Digital key compatibility
- Eight airbags and automatic braking
- 14-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 driver assistance suite
These upgrades bring the bZ closer to being a complete, well-rounded EV crossover.
Market Positioning
With enhanced range, improved performance, and only moderate price hikes, the 2026 Toyota bZ marks a significant leap forward from its predecessor. Toyota’s decision to integrate NACS charging and expand range across trims shows its intent to remain competitive against rivals like Hyundai, Kia, and Tesla.
While the entry-level trim sacrifices range and power, the higher trims offer real value for money, making the bZ an appealing choice for EV buyers who prioritize practicality, range, and Toyota’s reliability.
