Tesla’s Sales Slide 28% in Europe Despite EV Boom; Volkswagen and Renault Surge

Tesla Sales Plunge 28% in Europe Amid EV Market Growth and Rising Competition

Tesla’s market presence in Europe took a sharp hit in March 2025, with new car sales dropping 28.2% year-on-year, according to new data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA). This decline comes as overall battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in Europe soared by 23.6%, pointing to a shift in consumer preferences and growing competition in the electric vehicle space.

Despite the broader uptick in EV interest, Tesla’s market share in Europe slipped from 2.9% to just 2%, marking its third consecutive month of decline. The drop underscores challenges faced by Elon Musk’s EV giant, which is contending with stronger Chinese rivals, political backlash, and intensifying local competition.

Across the EU, UK, and EFTA markets, total new car registrations rose to 1.42 million in March—a 2.8% increase compared to the same period last year. Brands like Volkswagen and Renault capitalized on this momentum, posting gains of 10.3% and 13% respectively. However, Stellantis saw a 5.9% dip in registrations.

While Tesla faltered, the electrified vehicle segment as a whole thrived. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and battery EVs collectively accounted for 59.2% of all new car registrations in the EU—up from 49.1% in 2024. HEVs led the charge with a 23.9% rise, followed by BEVs at 17.1% and PHEVs at 12.4%.

Geographically, Spain and Italy saw strong growth with sales increasing by 23.2% and 6.3% respectively, while France and Germany experienced declines of 14.5% and 3.9%. Meanwhile, the UK posted a healthy 12.4% increase in registrations.

Analysts attribute the sustained EV growth to stricter EU emissions standards and a wider range of affordable electric models. However, Tesla’s slump suggests that branding, pricing, and regional sentiment are becoming pivotal factors in consumer decision-making.

As the EV race heats up, Tesla will need to reassert its competitive edge amid rising pressure from both Western and Eastern manufacturers.
