Chinese EV Maker’s Financial Woes Threaten Africa’s Affordable Electric Car Boom

Chinese EV Market Africa

Africa’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution is hitting a speed bump. Chinese automaker Neta Auto, known for affordable EVs like the Neta V, is facing a crisis as its parent company, Hozon New Energy Automobile, grapples with financial troubles. This could spell trouble for cost-conscious buyers in Africa and Asia, where Neta has been a game-changer for first-time car owners.

Neta’s Rise and Fall

Neta has delivered nearly 400,000 vehicles worldwide, with many zipping through countries like Kenya and Thailand. Its budget-friendly EVs have been a hit, offering lower fuel and maintenance costs compared to gas-powered cars. In Kenya, drivers like Paul Mwai rely on Neta models sold by dealers like Moja EV and Utu Cars to save money. But Hozon’s cash flow problems, including production halts and layoffs, have led to bankruptcy proceedings filed by a creditor. A failed $560 million fundraising effort in January 2025 has left the company on shaky ground.

Why This Matters for Africa

Affordable Chinese EVs have been a lifeline for Africa’s growing EV market, where buyers often choose second-hand gas cars due to their easy maintenance. EVs, with their complex software and batteries, need strong manufacturer support—something at risk if Neta collapses. In Kenya, where EV repair networks are still developing, a failure could leave owners with vehicles they can’t fix or resell, shaking confidence in electric cars.

The Bigger Picture

The Chinese EV market in Africa is fiercely competitive. Giant BYD is dominating with a price war, squeezing smaller players like Neta. Industry expert Lei Xing warns that struggling brands may need to pivot to spare parts or services to survive. If Neta falters, it could slow Africa’s shift to cleaner transportation, as trust in lesser-known EV brands wanes.

What’s Next?

Neta insists it’s still operational, but its future hinges on Hozon securing a financial lifeline. Meanwhile, Chinese brands like BYD continue to expand in Africa, partnering with local dealers to boost EV adoption. Will Africa’s affordable EV dream survive this setback? Only time will tell.
