History
Early Period (2010–2021)
Denza was founded in May 2010 following a memorandum of understanding between BYD Auto and Daimler AG to jointly develop electric vehicles. The company, originally named Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology Co., Ltd., received its business license in March 2011. The Denza brand was officially introduced in March 2012, with the promise of combining BYD’s expertise in battery technology and Daimler’s premium vehicle design and safety standards.
The brand showcased its first Denza EV Concept at Auto China 2012, which evolved into the Denza EV production model launched in December 2014. The vehicle, only available in selected Chinese cities, benefited from substantial government subsidies. However, limited adoption resulted in modest sales figures.
In 2018, the Denza EV was extensively restyled and renamed the Denza 500. The second production model, Denza X, was introduced in 2019, featuring significant Mercedes-Benz design influences. It was built on the BYD Tang platform but was discontinued by late 2021 due to underwhelming market performance.
Restructuring and Full BYD Ownership (2021–Present)
By December 2021, Mercedes-Benz reduced its 50% stake to 10%, giving BYD 90% control of Denza. This marked a strategic shift with BYD investing heavily in new models.
The first post-restructuring model, Denza D9, was launched in August 2022, a full-size MPV available in plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric (BEV) variants.
Following this, Denza introduced the Denza N7 electric SUV in March 2023, followed by the Denza N8, a mid-size SUV based on the discontinued Denza X.
In June 2024, Denza expanded internationally with the right-hand-drive Denza D9 EV in Hong Kong, marking its first presence outside mainland China. In September 2024, Mercedes-Benz fully exited Denza by transferring its remaining 10% stake to BYD, making Denza a wholly owned subsidiary of BYD.
Name and Branding
Denza is derived from the Chinese name Tengshi (腾势; pinyin: Téngshì), which translates to “rising power and momentum”. Alternative interpretations include “win power” or “winning circumstances”.
