AITO is the first brand under the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA, 鸿蒙智行), a collaboration where Huawei provides full-stack intelligent vehicle solutions to traditional automakers. Huawei has also announced partnerships with manufacturers such as Chery, BAIC Motor, and JAC Motors to implement a similar business model.
The name AITO stands for “Adding Intelligence to Auto.”
History In December 2021, Huawei introduced the AITO brand and unveiled its first vehicle, the AITO M5, developed in collaboration with Seres Group. The vehicle was based on the Seres SF5 SUV. Under the partnership, Seres oversaw the full life cycle of the vehicle, including R&D, manufacturing, and after-sales service, while Huawei contributed to product definition, development, and sales channels. Both companies jointly managed quality control and marketing. By 2023, Huawei expanded its role to include after-sales and deliveries.
AITO vehicles are officially distributed by Seres Auto Sales Co., Ltd.
In March 2023, AITO underwent a brief rebranding to “Huawei Wènjiè,” but following an announcement from Yu Chengdong (Richard Yu), CEO of Huawei Terminal BG and CEO of Smart Car Solution BU, all promotional materials linking Huawei to AITO were removed as of April 1, 2023.
In June 2023, the Chinese name and trademark for AITO (问界; Wènjiè) were transferred from Beijing Ruidekaizhuo Technology and Trade Co., Ltd. to Huawei. However, the English trademark “AITO” and its logo for Class 12 of the Nice Classification (vehicles) remained under Seres.
In July 2024, Huawei announced the transfer of AITO’s English trademarks and patents related to Seres Group for 2.5 billion RMB. The decision was driven by Chinese government regulations requiring automobile brands to be owned by their respective manufacturers.
Operations AITO operates as an ecosystem brand under a new business model. Huawei does not manufacture cars directly but supports automakers with product design, supply chain management, quality control, software integration, user experience, brand marketing, and sales channels. Each manufacturer focuses on a specific vehicle category, ensuring non-overlapping product lineups under Huawei’s comprehensive solution.
Technology
HarmonyOS Cockpit AITO vehicles feature the HarmonyOS Cockpit, powered by Huawei’s Kirin system-on-chip (SoC). This system integrates augmented reality head-up displays (AR-HUD) and a smart instrument cluster. Huawei has opened APIs for HarmonyOS Cockpit, enabling OEMs and partners to develop additional features.
Autonomous Driving System AITO vehicles are equipped with Huawei’s Autonomous Driving System (ADS). The ADS 2.0 system includes 128 LiDARs, 11 HD cameras, 3 millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic radars, running on a self-developed Huawei chipset. The system achieves Level 2+ autonomous driving capabilities, enabling human-like navigation, pedestrian recognition, automatic obstacle avoidance, and valet parking.
Huawei prices the ADS 2.0 at 36,000 RMB (~5,200 USD) per vehicle when sold to partner manufacturers.
