EV Autocharge feature makes charging easier

A Mini Cooper driver and EV enthusiast has highlighted the EV Autocharge feature, calling it easier than pumping gas. TikTok user Simply Gregster (@simplygregster), a mechanic and electric vehicle advocate, posted a video showing how Autocharge transforms the charging process.

Instead of fumbling with apps, credit card readers, or RFID cards, Autocharge lets drivers simply plug in. “EV charging now has become almost as easy as pumping gas with Autocharge,” Gregster said. Within 15 seconds, his Mini was authorized and charging.

How EV Autocharge works

The EV Autocharge feature uses stored vehicle and payment details registered through the Autocharge network. When a compatible EV pulls into a participating station, the system recognizes the car and enables charging automatically.

Gregster explained: “Open the door. Put the connector in. It’s communicating. The Mini has Autocharge enabled. We are authorized to charge. And within 15 seconds, we’re charging up. Easier than pumping gas.”

The convenience eliminates the need for smartphone apps or unreliable credit card readers. Gregster added, “Plug and charge. Autocharge is available here. Easy EV charging is definitely here.”

Alternatives and industry adoption

Autocharge isn’t the only streamlined charging system. Plug & Charge, a similar technology, uses encrypted connections to handle payments remotely. Tesla pioneered its Supercharger network in 2012, allowing rapid charging speeds that have since tripled. By 2022, GM integrated Plug & Charge into its EV lineup through the EVGo app.

These advancements aim to make EV adoption smoother by reducing charging friction and improving accessibility.

Public reaction and skepticism

Despite the praise, some viewers questioned whether the EV Autocharge feature actually saves time. Critics noted that while it simplifies payment, charging itself still takes much longer than refueling with gasoline. One commenter joked, “Pump 10 gallons of gas in less than four minutes. Full tank. Gone. Two hours later, he’s at 19 percent.”

Others argued that Tesla remains years ahead with its Supercharger technology. Still, the availability of Autocharge demonstrates growing industry-wide momentum toward easier charging experiences.

Conclusion

The EV Autocharge feature shows how automakers and charging networks are closing the convenience gap between electric vehicles and gas-powered cars. While charging times remain longer than fueling at a gas pump, eliminating the hassle of apps and cards moves EVs one step closer to mass-market practicality.
