2026 Subaru Solterra Redesign Shocks the EV Market With Major Upgrades
Subaru has officially shaken off its EV underdog status with the bold reveal of the 2026 Subaru Solterra, launched at the New York International Auto Show. A dramatic redesign, performance boost, and tech overhaul make this electric crossover a serious contender.
From Bland to Bold: A Striking New Look
The previous Solterra struggled to stand out, but the 2026 model flips the script. The new design, especially the Touring trim, ditches its Toyota bZ4X-inspired aesthetics in favor of a clean, modern face. Sleek split-style headlights, sharper LED daytime lights, and a fresh bumper design give the Solterra a bold identity. Subaru’s illuminated emblem up front adds a premium touch, while the rear features a new full-width wordmark replacing the traditional blue logo.
Inside, the upgrades continue. A massive 14-inch touchscreen—the largest in any Subaru—anchors the dashboard. Dual wireless charging pads and a refined center console round out the interior refresh, blending functionality with future-forward design.
Better Range, More Power, Faster Charging
While the battery grows slightly from 72.8 kWh to 74.7 kWh, Subaru somehow managed to extract 285 miles of range—a 25% improvement. Performance also sees a jump. The base dual-motor setup now hits 233 hp, while the all-new Solterra XT boasts an impressive 338 horsepower, making it Subaru’s most powerful EV—just behind the upcoming Trailseeker EV.
Standard across all trims is Subaru’s X-Mode AWD with modes like Normal, Snow/Dirt, and Deep Snow/Mud. Add in hill descent control, and the Solterra’s off-road credentials start to shine.
It also comes equipped with the NACS charging connector and ups its DC fast charging to 150 kW (from 100 kW), enabled by a battery pre-conditioning system. Despite the higher wattage, the 10–80% charge time remains around 35 minutes—but now with fewer stops thanks to the longer range.
No Longer Playing Catch-Up
Subaru’s 2026 Solterra may not be the class leader, but it finally plays in the same league as the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Chevy Equinox EV. With enhanced performance, a more refined cabin, and styling that reflects Subaru’s identity—not Toyota’s—the Solterra is no longer an afterthought. It’s a bold step forward for a brand now serious about electrification.
