BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. is an automobile manufacturing company headquartered in Shenyang, China. It is a joint venture between BMW (majority holder) and Brilliance Auto, primarily engaged in the production, distribution, and sale of BMW passenger vehicles in mainland China.
March 27, 2003 – BMW and Brilliance Auto established the joint venture with BMW holding 50%, Brilliance 40.5%, and the Shenyang municipal government9.5%.
October 2003 – The first Chinese-manufactured BMW, a BMW 325, was sold.
April 2009 – Announced construction of a second automobile assembly plant in Shenyang, with production beginning in May 2012.
2013 – Established a research and development center, later expanded in 2020, becoming BMW’s largest R&D center outside Germany.
October 2018 – BMW announced an increase in its stake from 50% to 75%, marking it the first foreign carmaker to gain majority control of a Chinese joint venture.
February 2022 – BMW officially acquired a 75% stake, with Brilliance Auto retaining 25%.
August 23, 2020 – Completion of the world’s largest BMW paint shop and the new BMW factory in Tiexi.
