The Nio ET9 First Drive experience showcases a revolutionary electric vehicle pushing the limits of luxury, technology, and ride comfort. As China’s flagship response to models like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the ET9 blends performance, innovation, and futuristic features in a single package.
Equipped with a 100-kilowatt-hour battery, the ET9 uses a 925-volt architecture and supports 600 kW DC fast charging. It adds up to 158 miles in five minutes, or swaps its battery in just three minutes at a Nio Power Swap Station. On China’s CLTC test cycle, it delivers over 400 miles of range. With dual electric motors pushing nearly 700 horsepower, performance matches its impressive specs.
Design-wise, the ET9 features fastback-style lines, a first-ever frunk for Nio, and advanced interior tech. However, what really sets it apart are two innovations: magnetic predictive suspension and steer-by-wire control.
The ET9 uses SkyRide, a production-ready version of the famed Bose predictive suspension, built by Boston-based ClearMotion. This electrohydraulic system adjusts wheel positions 60 times faster than any spring system, with 1,000 torque adjustments per second. It reads road bumps in advance using high-definition maps and real-time reaction, effectively canceling out imperfections. The result is a smooth, level ride—even at high speeds or over rough joints.
Driving the ET9 feels almost surreal. On highways outside Shanghai, the car remained astonishingly stable. The suspension prioritized body-level balance, absorbing overpass joints with vacuum-like precision. Combine that with its steer-by-wire system, and the ET9 feels more like a futuristic transport pod than a traditional car.
For entertainment, the ET9 can turn into a mobile 4DX cinema. Watching a movie in the front seat, the car’s suspension mimicked screen action. In a racing game, it banked into corners with realistic motion feedback. Though these may seem like gimmicks, they represent a new wave of luxury interaction.
While Nio does not plan to bring the ET9 to the United States, its underlying tech may spread globally. The ClearMotion suspension is American-made and could soon appear in other high-end EVs. The ET9’s innovation also signals a broader shift: Chinese EV brands now lead in certain tech areas once dominated by legacy Western manufacturers.
