Changan Mazda will officially launch the Changan Mazda EZ-60 on September 26, unveiling its most ambitious new energy SUV yet. The midsize model comes in both battery electric (BEV) and extended-range electric (EREV) versions, marking a major milestone for the joint venture between Changan Automobile and Mazda in China. Moreover, this launch reflects Mazda’s growing commitment to electrification in global markets.
The Changan Mazda EZ-60 is the brand’s first new energy SUV and its second globally oriented model after the EZ-6 sedan. Therefore, it plays a strategic role in expanding Mazda’s footprint in the competitive Chinese EV landscape.
Strong Consumer Demand Ahead of Launch
The EZ-60 debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show on April 23, where Changan Mazda opened pre-orders. Although the company did not disclose pricing at the time, interest surged immediately. Within just 48 hours, the model secured 10,060 pre-orders.
By May 16, that number had doubled to 20,000 units. Then, by August 27, pre-orders surpassed 40,000 — a clear sign of strong market confidence. Since Chinese consumers are increasingly favoring electrified vehicles, this response highlights the appeal of Mazda’s design and engineering reputation.
Dedicated Production Line Built for Scale
To meet this demand, Changan Mazda upgraded its Nanjing plant with a dedicated production line for the EZ-60. The company invested nearly RMB 200 million (USD 28 million) to modernize equipment and ensure high manufacturing standards.
As a result, production is now fully operational. On August 27, the first batch of Changan Mazda EZ-60 units rolled out and shipped to over 100 dealerships nationwide. Meanwhile, final training and setup are underway at sales centers to prepare for customer deliveries.
Dual Powertrains Offer Flexibility
The Changan Mazda EZ-60 stands out by offering two distinct powertrains:
- The BEV version delivers zero-emission driving with a long-range battery, ideal for urban and regional use.
- The EREV model combines an electric motor with a small range-extending engine, allowing drivers to travel long distances without charging anxiety.
Accordingly, this dual approach gives buyers more choice. While some prefer pure electric performance, others value the flexibility of extended range. Mazda thus caters to a broader audience across different lifestyles and driving needs.
Global Design, Local Manufacturing
Although developed for China, the Changan Mazda EZ-60 follows global design and engineering standards. It features sleek, aerodynamic styling, sharp LED lighting, and a minimalist interior focused on digital interfaces.
Additionally, the SUV integrates Mazda’s signature driving dynamics — now adapted for electric power. Drivers can expect responsive handling, precise steering, and a balanced ride. Furthermore, advanced driver assistance systems are expected to include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automated parking.
Strategic Move in a Crowded Market
China’s EV market is highly competitive, with dominant players like BYD, NIO, Li Auto, and Xiaomi capturing significant share. However, Changan Mazda is betting on brand trust, Japanese design, and quality build to differentiate the Changan Mazda EZ-60.
Moreover, the high pre-order volume suggests that consumers still value reliability and driving experience — areas where Mazda has a strong reputation. Given this momentum, the EZ-60 could carve out a niche in the premium midsize SUV segment.
Final Preparations Underway
With vehicles now arriving at dealerships, Changan Mazda is in the final stretch before launch. The company will reveal official pricing, trim levels, battery capacity, and range figures on September 26.

Meanwhile, marketing campaigns are ramping up, and test drives will soon begin. Accordingly, customers are eager to experience the SUV firsthand.
The launch of the Changan Mazda EZ-60 is more than just a new model release — it’s a statement of intent. As Mazda accelerates its electrification strategy, the EZ-60 serves as a critical test of its ability to compete in the fast-moving Chinese EV market.
With over 40,000 pre-orders, dedicated production, and dual powertrain options, the Changan Mazda EZ-60 enters the ring with strong momentum. If pricing and features align with expectations, it could become one of the standout electric SUVs of 2024.
Thus, September 26 isn’t just a launch date — it’s a turning point.
