Avatr Technology Co., Ltd. is a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Chongqing, China. Established in 2018, Avatr is a premium EV brand created through a joint venture led by Changan Automobile with technological support from Huawei and battery technology from CATL.
History
Changan-Nio Partnership
In 2018, Changan Automobile formed a joint venture with Nio Inc. to develop advanced electric vehicles. The venture was structured as a 50:50 partnership, but Nio withdrew in 2020.
Establishment of Avatr
Following Nio’s withdrawal, Changan partnered with CATL and Huawei, renaming the company Avatr Technology in May 2021.
- November 2021 – Avatr underwent capital restructuring, reducing Changan’s ownership from 95.38% to 39.02%. CATL acquired 23.99%, while other investors acquired the remaining shares. Huawei did not take an equity stake but provided technological solutions.
- August 2022 – Avatr completed Series A funding, raising nearly 5 billion yuan. Changan’s stake increased to 40.99%, while CATL’s reduced to 17.10%.
- August 2023 – Avatr’s Series B financing increased its valuation to 20 billion RMB, attracting new investors, including China Everbright Investment and Guangkai Holdings.
- August 2024 – Avatr invested 11.5 billion RMB in Huawei’s subsidiary Yinwang, acquiring a 10% stake, upgrading their partnership from “HI” (Huawei Inside) to “HI Plus.”
- December 2024 – Avatr secured 11 billion yuan (1.5 billion USD) in Series C financing, maintaining Changan’s 40.99% stake while restructuring smaller investors.
